Humor is a Funny Thing (1 hour)

Using Humor to Maximize Learning (4 hours)

The purpose of this session is to affirm, sustain and encourage individuals in the practice of humor not only as a personal tool to optimize a healthy life style, but to maximize the benefits of humor in education.   These benefits include current research-based data on the use of humor to nurture creativity, to increase the capacity for memory retention, to support an optimal learning environment and to build safe communities that reflect the relational trust necessary for collaborative learning. This session uses Mary Kay's book, Using Humor to Maximize Learning as the text for this workshop.

Research Causes Cancer in Rats;
 Infusing Humor into Learning  (2 hours)

What is humor exactly?  How do you get a sense of humor?  Once you find yours, how do you use it to maximize learning?  If it is so important, why is it rarely mentioned in teacher preparation without some clues for finding and using it? Cognitive research on positive emotionality reveals the benefits that humor provides in maximizing a healthy lifestye and increasing productivity. Participants will complete a humor styles inventory and practice increasing their individual sense of humor.

Got Stress?  Survival Strategies (2 hours)

Stress seems to creep up on many of us - creating unexpected problems when we least expect it. Participants will examine their current lifestyle and identify their own key stress indicators. Resources for reducing stress will be shared. Participants will focus on achieving maximum mind/body balance. After a review of current research, time will be provided for individual goal setting.

Don't Take Life Seriously; You Won't Get Out Alive! (keynote address)

This session is designed as a brief keynote address featuring the benefits of humor and positive emotionality. The development of an individual humor practice is encouraged using humor as an integral component in developing a wellness lifestyle.

My Kids Didn't Come With Instructions

As the parent of four children and as a former kindergarten teacher, Mary Kay really loves to work with parents on how cognitive research can benefit them.  Her goal is to assist parents in having more fun and in achieving a balance of work and family life.  There will be time to delight in the joy and challenges of providing for the needs of individual children.

AD/HD:  I Wasn’t Paying Attention When You Told Me to Pay Attention!

Is it in the water?  Why do we have so many kids with AD/HD?  Learn specific techniques for helping these kids from someone who is both the parent of an ADHD son and a former K-9 teacher.  This session will explore resources and discuss ideas for meeting the needs of the kids who just cannot seem to pay attention.
